Study Skills & Organization
Study skills coaching in Barrington and Wheaton
Some students understand the material and still lose points to missed deadlines, unusable notes, and study time that produces nothing. Coaching teaches the planning, note-taking, time management, and follow-through that every class quietly depends on.
What coaching covers
Study skills coaching covers four working habits
These habits transfer. A student who learns them for chemistry uses them in history the same week, and keeps using them long after the class is over.
Planning and organization
A single place where every assignment, test date, and long-term project lives, reviewed at the start of each week. Your student stops discovering deadlines on the morning they are due, and a binder stops being a place where paper goes to disappear.
Note-taking
Notes built to be reread, with structure, margins, and the questions the teacher kept repeating. Studying gets far shorter when the notes are usable.
Time management
Breaking a five-page paper or a unit exam into dated steps, then protecting the blocks where the work happens around practice, rehearsal, and a job.
Work ethic and follow-through
The habit of starting before you feel ready, finishing what you started, and checking your own work before handing it in. Coaching makes this concrete with weekly commitments your student sets, then reports back on, so the accountability gradually moves from the tutor to the student.
The shift
Study skills problems parents recognize, and what replaces them
What it looks like now
- Studies for hours and the grade stays flat
- Finished homework never makes it to the teacher
- Every project starts the night before
- The planner is empty or was lost in September
- Notes get taken and never opened again
- Grades slipped when the schedule got busier
What coaching puts in place
- One weekly review that catches deadlines early
- Notes organized so studying from them works
- Long assignments broken into dated steps
- Study sessions that are shorter and more effective
- A routine that survives a busy activity week
- Follow-through your student owns without reminders
Better together
Study skills coaching pairs with weekly subject tutoring
Most families arrive with a subject problem and a system problem tangled together. One weekly hour can carry both: work the chemistry that is due Thursday, then set up the plan that keeps Thursday from arriving as a surprise next time.

What parents ask about study skills coaching
What does study skills coaching actually teach?
Study skills coaching teaches the habits that surround the schoolwork: planning a week before it starts, taking notes that are worth rereading, breaking a long assignment into steps with dates attached, studying in a way that builds recall, and following through when nobody is watching. These are learnable procedures, and most students were never taught them.
Which students benefit most from study skills coaching?
Students who understand the material and still lose points benefit most. That includes the student who forgets to turn in finished work, the one who studies for hours with little to show for it, the one who starts every project the night before, and the one whose grades slipped when middle school or high school added more moving parts.
How does study skills coaching work alongside subject tutoring?
The two pair naturally. Subject tutoring closes the gap in the material while study skills coaching fixes how the work gets planned, recorded, and finished. Many families run one weekly session that carries both, using whichever the week demands more of.
How much does study skills coaching cost?
Coaching is billed at the standard hourly tutoring rate for your student's grade level: $65 per hour for middle school and younger, and $75 per hour for high school. There are no contracts, and you can change the schedule at any point.
How long does it take before habits actually stick?
A student can learn a planning system in one session and will need weeks of steady practice before it runs without prompting. Coaching is built for that second part, checking the system against real assignments each week until your student maintains it on their own.
Where do study skills sessions happen?
In your home, at the Barrington Learning Center or the Wheaton Learning Center, or online. Coaching often works well at home, where the actual backpack, planner, and study space are within reach.
