The five components of Effective Reading Instruction
Take Flight encompasses all five. Every student begins at lesson 1, whatever their grade or reading level, and works the sequence from there. A baseline assessment records where your student stands today without changing the starting point.

Hearing and manipulating the individual sounds inside spoken words. This is the layer most struggling readers never locked in.

Connecting those sounds to the letters and letter patterns that spell them, so an unfamiliar word can be sounded out rather than guessed.

Reading accurately, at a workable pace, and with expression, so attention is free for meaning instead of decoding.

Knowing what the words mean, including the prefixes, suffixes, and roots that build the long academic words in middle and high school texts.

What the program looks like week to week
Your student meets 4 times a week for one hour, one-on-one, at the Barrington learning center. The program requires that cadence, so plan the four hours into the week before you enrol.

There is no placement shortcut and no skipping ahead. The baseline assessment records the starting picture, and the lessons start at the beginning for every student.

What is Take Flight, and why does it work for dyslexia?
Take Flight: A Comprehensive Intervention for Students with Dyslexia is a Tier III intervention from Scottish Rite for Children. It teaches the structure of written language explicitly, and it encompasses all five components of Effective Reading Instruction: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Nothing is left for the student to infer, so students stop guessing at words and start decoding them.
Do I need a dyslexia diagnosis before starting?
No. A formal diagnosis is useful, and we work happily alongside one, though it is not required to begin. Every student takes a baseline reading assessment first, which records where decoding, fluency, and comprehension stand today. The lessons themselves still begin at lesson 1 for every student.
How is this different from regular reading tutoring or homework help?
Homework help gets tonight's assignment done. Reading intervention rebuilds the underlying skill so assignments get easier on their own. A student with dyslexia can spend years getting help finishing readings without ever being taught the decoding system they missed. Intervention goes back to that foundation and teaches it directly.
How often does a Take Flight student meet with a tutor?
