A student can be excellent at one of these and drowning in the next, in the same semester, with the same work ethic. The courses simply test different abilities.

Biology

Vocabulary and systems

Biology hands a student several hundred new terms and then grades them on how two of those terms interact. Memorizing definitions gets a passing quiz score and fails the unit test, because the test asks how a change in one part of a cycle moves everything downstream. Genetics, cellular respiration, and ecology are where the reading load turns into a reasoning load.

Chemistry

Algebra fluency

Stoichiometry is proportional reasoning and unit conversion in a lab coat. Mole conversions, limiting reactants, molarity, and the gas laws all ask a student to rearrange a relationship and track units through it. A student who hesitates when solving for a variable will lose chemistry long before the chemistry itself is the problem.

Physics

Algebra and spatial reasoning

Most physics teachers hand out the equation sheet, which tells you where the grade actually lives. Drawing the free-body diagram, resolving a vector into components, and deciding which relationship the situation calls for are the graded skills. Kinematics and forces reward a student who sketches before they compute.

Earth & environmental science

Data interpretation

Often taken as the gentler option, and then graded on charts, maps, cycles, and multi-part written responses tied to a data set. AP Environmental Science in particular asks for a calculation carried through with units and a written justification alongside it, which catches strong readers who skip the arithmetic.

The honest diagnosis

A science grade is often a math grade wearing a disguise

When a student understands the concept out loud and still misses the question, the arithmetic underneath is usually the culprit. Chemistry sits on proportional reasoning and unit conversion. Physics sits on solving for a variable and reading a right triangle. Environmental science sits on percentages and rates.

A tutor who spots that pattern will say so early rather than spending a semester re-teaching content your student already knows. Sometimes the right move is to work the algebra directly inside the science problems, and sometimes it warrants its own hour.

These two account for an outsized share of a science grade, and neither one gets taught with the care it costs. Both are learnable in a handful of sessions.

Rubrics reward a shape most students were never shown. Sessions work through it in order, with your student holding the pen.

  • A procedure another student could repeat without asking questions

  • A data table with units in the headers and consistent significant figures

  • Error discussion that names a real source instead of blaming the equipment

  • A conclusion that quotes the numbers collected and stops there

Multi-step problem setup

Long science problems are lost in the first thirty seconds, before any arithmetic happens. Sessions slow that half minute down until the habit sticks.

  • List what is given and what the question is actually asking for

  • Write the units next to every quantity before touching a calculator

  • Sketch the situation, even when the problem did not include a figure

  • Choose the relationship and solve it symbolically first

  • Check whether the size of the answer is physically believable

Science runs on a unit rhythm, so a standing weekly session naturally lands on a different job each week.

    The week a unit opens

    Sessions front-load the framework: what the unit is actually about, which terms carry weight, and how this chapter connects to the last one. Getting the map early is what keeps the reading from turning into a vocabulary list with no shape.

    Lab week

    The tutor works the report with your student: stating a testable hypothesis, laying out a data table that someone else could read, discussing sources of error honestly, and writing a conclusion that points back at the numbers rather than at what the student expected.

    The week before the test

    Practice problems worked the way the exam will present them, with the tutor watching your student set up rather than solving alongside them. Setup is where science tests are won, and the only way to know it transferred is to stop helping.

What science courses does College Tutors Chicago tutor?

Biology, chemistry, physics, earth and environmental science, anatomy and physiology, middle school general science, the AP and honors sections of each, and any other science class your student needs. Give us the course title and the teacher when you sign up so the tutor can match the sequence your student is actually being taught.

My student did well in biology and is failing chemistry. What is different?

Biology rewards reading, recall, and connecting systems. Chemistry rewards algebra. A student who reads well and rearranges equations slowly can look strong in one and lost in the other within the same school year, and the fix is usually math practice attached to chemistry problems rather than more chemistry reading.

Can a tutor help with lab reports?

Yes. Lab reports are a regular part of science sessions, and they are graded on a set of skills nobody teaches directly: writing a hypothesis that can actually be tested, building a readable data table, discussing error without blaming the equipment, and tying the conclusion to the numbers collected. Your student writes it, and the tutor works the structure with them.

Do you tutor AP science courses?

Yes. AP Biology, AP Chemistry, AP Physics, and AP Environmental Science are all regular requests, along with dual-credit college science taken in high school. Bring the syllabus and the most recent graded free-response question, because AP scoring rubrics reward a specific style of answer that is worth practicing directly.

How much does science tutoring cost?

Science tutoring is $65 an hour for middle school and younger students and $75 an hour for high school students, the same rate as every other subject. That price covers a learning center or online session. In-home sessions are $5 per hour more than the rates above. There is no contract to sign.

Should we start with science tutoring or math tutoring?

Start with the science course that is causing the grade, because the tutor will find the math gap from inside the chemistry or physics problems where it is actually costing points. If the gap turns out to be wide enough that it is slowing down more than one class, we will tell you plainly that math tutoring is the better use of the hour.
